Information to help you prepare your application

Information about certifying and translating documents, communicating with the department, using a migration agent, authorising another person to receive information from the department, and receiving assistance with your application.
See: Information to Help You Prepare Your Application

Travel to Australia

You must not make arrangements to travel to Australia until you are advised that your visa has been granted.

Your visa is linked to the passport number you used in your application and you must use the same passport to travel to Australia.

If you do obtain a new passport, you must advise the department of the new passport details before you travel to Australia. Otherwise, you may experience significant delays at the airport and could be denied permission to board your plane.

Application charge

You must pay a non-refundable visa application charge when you lodge your visa application.
See: Fees and Charges

Application checklist

The application checklist details the information and supporting documents that you must provide with your application. Complete applications are likely to be processed more quickly. Incomplete applications may be delayed or, in some cases, refused.
See: Application Document Checklist (48KB PDF file)

How to apply

You can apply for a Work and Holiday visa by using a paper application.
See: Form 1208 Application for a Work and Holiday Visa (254KB PDF file)

Applicants must be outside Australia when they apply and when the visa is granted.

Applicants from the USA can also apply for a Work and Holiday visa online.
See: Online applications

Work and Holiday visa online applications can be lodged from anywhere outside Australia.

Note: Only applicants from the USA will be able to apply for a Work and Holiday visa online.

Certified documents

All supporting documentation must be in English or include an official English translation if the originals are in another language. Where the document is required to be certified in a place outside Australia, this means that the copy has been authorised or stamped by a person who is the equivalent of a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declarations in that place.

All other documents must be the original copies.

Where to lodge your application

Work and Holiday visa paper applications made by passport holders from Chile, Thailand and Turkey must be made outside Australia and lodged by post, fax or hand-delivered to the overseas Australian government office in the country or region that issued the applicant’s passport.

Note: Iranian nationals who are eligible to apply for a second and third Work and Holiday visa must apply while in Australia.

Note: Applicants from the USA will be able to lodge their paper application form at any departmental office outside Australia.

You are required to post, courier or hand-deliver your application and supporting documentation with the application charge.
