Step 2 - Sponsor Completes Sponsorship Form and Lodges Application


To lodge an application for this visa, the sponsor must have received a signed and completed visa application from each visitor. The application must include all relevant supporting documents.

Application charge

The sponsor lodges a non-refundable visa application charge for each visitor when lodging the application in Australia.

Application document checklist

The application document checklist details the information and supporting documents that the sponsor and visitor must provide when they lodge the application. It is in the sponsor's best interest to provide all relevant documentation at the time of application as incomplete applications may be delayed or, in some cases, refused.

The sponsor completes the sponsorship form and attaches all necessary documentation.

How and where to lodge an application

The table below describes the two-step procedure that the sponsor follows to lodge the application in Australia. The visitor must be outside Australia.

Step Sponsor's Responsibilities
1 Complete and sign the sponsorship form, listing details for each visitor/family unit member you are sponsoring.

Lodge the following at a regional office of the department in Australia:

  • sponsorship Form 1149
  • visa application Form 48S, completed and signed by each visitor/family unit overseas
  • application fee for each applicant overseas.

Sponsors are encouraged to lodge applications with their nearest DIAC office. Applications will be processed in the state or territory where the sponsor resides.

Applications can be lodged by mail, courier or in person.

Some offices may require that the sponsor make an appointment with their office before lodging the application.
