Applying Online

Applying outside Australia

If you are outside Australia and hold a passport from an eligible country or region, you can submit an online application at any time.
See: Eligible passports for online applications

You can also use a registered travel agent, airline service or specialist provider to lodge an online application on your behalf.
See: Travel Agents registered for eVisa services

Applying in Australia

If you are in Australia and want to apply online to extend your stay, you must meet all of the following:

  • hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority (Visitor), an eVisitor, 676 Tourist visa or a paper-lodged tourist visa granted for a stay of three months or less
  • not have a 'No Further Stay' condition attached to your current visa
  • not intend to stay more than six months from the date you last entered Australia
  • have access to a credit card.

Saving online applications

When using the online applications system, the 'save' function allows you to save the information you have entered, and return to it at a later stage. Saved applications will be stored for 28 days. Applications not completed after this time will be automatically deleted. When this happens, you will need to start a new online application.

Transaction Reference Number

A Transaction Reference Number (TRN) is a unique number assigned to each completed online application. It is important that you record this number as it is used to:

  • identify your application when you communicate with the department
  • access information about the progress of your online application.

Check the progress of your online application

You can use your Transaction Reference Number (TRN) to check the status of your online visa application at any time.
See: Check the progress of your online application

After you lodge your application

For information about what happens after you lodge your application:
See: After You Lodge Your Application

Start your online application or continue a saved application

Once you start your online application, you will be asked a series of questions to determine whether or not you are eligible to continue. If the eVisa system indicates you are not eligible to apply online, you will need to apply by mail or in person.
