How and Where to Lodge your Application

Applying by mail or in person

To make a valid visa application, you must send the application form and supporting documentation to the correct address. The preferred method of sending your documentation is by mail. Applications sent by courier are also accepted.

If you wish to have your passport (and visa if granted) returned to you by secured/registered mail, please include a pre-paid self-addressed envelope.

Applicants outside Australia: You can lodge your application, with payment, by post or in person at any departmental office overseas. Contact the office beforehand to confirm what payment method is acceptable.

After you lodge your application

You may be asked to provide information in addition to that provided in your application. If you are, you will be given a date by which you will have to provide the information. The department will continue processing your application after that date. You cannot delay a decision by saying you may or will give information later.

Application decision

If the visa is approved you will receive a letter from the department providing:

• advice that you have been granted the Medical Treatment visa
• details of any conditions placed on your visa.

If the visa is not approved you will receive a letter advising the reasons for the refusal decision. The letter will also advise you whether you can ask for the decision to be reviewed by the Migration Review Tribunal and explain how to apply for review. Most medical treatment visa applications made outside Australia cannot be reviewed by the Migration Review Tribunal.
