Appointing an agent
If you wish for an agent to act on your behalf and for the department to communicate with an agent about your application, you must tell the department. You will need to write to the department or use Form 956 Appointment of a migration agent.
See: Form 956 Appointment of a migration agent or exempt agent or other authorised recipient (149KB PDF file)
Your obligations
If you appoint an agent to act for you, you are still responsible for the accuracy of the information and supporting documentation that is provided to the department with your application.
If an agent assists you with your application, please make sure you include your agent's 7-digit number, which is either:
- migration agent registration number (MARN) if they are registered with the Migration Agent Registration Authority
or - offshore agent ID number (if they have been issued one by the department).
If you decide to withdraw or change your agent you must advise your case officer in writing or by completing Form 956 as soon as possible. You should also inform your old migration agent that they no longer have authority to act on your behalf.
See: Form 956 Appointment of a migration agent or exempt agent or other authorised recipientt (149KB PDF file)
Communication about your application when you use an agent
Appointing an agent to act on your behalf allows the department to:
- discuss your application with the agent and seek further information from them
- send your agent written communication about your application.
All written communication will be sent to your agent and you will be taken to have received any documents sent to them.
Further information
Further information about appointing an agent can be found on Form 956.
