Overseas Employer Obligations

Overseas employers must be party to the professional development agreement with the Australian sponsoring organisation. Overseas employers must:

  • select and invite eligible overseas participants with a genuine intention to participate in the professional development program
  • support the overseas participants throughout the program
  • fulfil all their commitments under the professional development agreement
  • advise the department of any organisational change which may affect their eligibility to participate in the program
  • pay any program costs for which they are liable under the professional development agreement, which may include:
    • an overseas participant's travel and entry to Australia
    • tuition for a professional development program
    • an overseas participant's accommodation
    • an overseas participant's living expenses in Australia
    • an overseas participant's health insurance in Australia
    • an overseas participant's return travel from Australia
  • specify in the professional development agreement which, if any, costs are to be met by overseas participants.
  • only invite overseas participants whom they are satisfied can meet any of the above costs, if overseas participants are required under the agreement to meet such costs.

Note: Overseas participants are not permitted to fund their own tuition costs.
