Sponsored Training

Step 2 - Sponsoring Organisation Nominates a Position

The sponsor is required to lodge a nomination unless the training is to be provided by the Commonwealth.

To make a nomination, the Australian organisation or government agency must have either:

  • already lodged a sponsorship application for approval as an occupational trainee sponsor
  • had a previous occupational trainee sponsorship approved.

The nomination or visa application may not be considered until the sponsorship is approved.

The purpose of the nomination process is to identify the:

  • occupational training to be provided in Australia
  • eligibility of the proposed training for this visa
  • skills and experience required for the position
  • overseas applicant nominated to undertake training, and
  • their skills and qualifications to perform the activities of the training.

Nomination form

The sponsor must complete the nomination and attach all necessary documentation.
See: Form 1378 Nomination for a temporary resident position (334KB PDF file)

Important: Applicants who provide false or misleading information may have their applications refused.

Nomination fee

There is a non-refundable fee for applications.

How and where to apply

You should lodge the nomination, documentation and appropriate fee by post, courier, fax and in person.

The nomination with any supporting documentation must be lodged in Australia directly with the Adelaide Occupational Trainee Processing Centre.
See: Adelaide Occupational Trainee Processing Centre

After the sponsor lodges the application

The nomination will be considered by the department. In some cases you may be asked to provide additional information to enable a decision to be made.

If a nomination is approved, the department will send you an approval letter by post or email.

If a nomination is not approved, the department will send you a refusal letter by post or email advising of the decision, reasons for the decision and information about any review rights.

Both the sponsorship and nomination approval letters are to be retained.  A copy of the sponsorship approval letter is to be provided to each applicant you nominate to fill a position.  The visa applicant will be required to provide, with their visa application, the sponsor approval letter or a receipt that the sponsorship application has been lodged. A nomination must be approved before the visa can be granted, unless the training is being provided by the Commonwealth.
