Sponsor Eligibility


An organisation is required to be approved as an occupational trainee sponsor to sponsor people from overseas for occupational training. The following requirements must be met for your organisation to become an approved sponsor.

The sponsoring organisation must be one of the following:

  • an Australian organisation that is lawfully operating in Australia
  • a government agency
  • a foreign government agency.

Good business record and abide by Australian laws

To meet this requirement:

  • there must be nothing adverse known about the organisation
  • if the organisation has previously sponsored overseas workers to Australia, they must have a satisfactory record of complying with Australian laws
  • the activities of the organisation must not be illegal in Australia.

Capacity to comply with sponsorship obligations

The sponsor must have the capacity to comply with sponsorship obligations.

Renewing sponsorship approval

A sponsor may be approved for up to three years. To continue to employ or engage people from overseas you will need to reapply before your sponsor approval ceases.

Health insurance requirements for trainees

All Occupational Trainee visa holders who were granted a visa on or after 14 September 2009, must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia or their visa may be cancelled.

It is up to the occupational trainee visa applicant to ensure that their health insurance satisfies the requirements for the Occupational Trainee visa.
