An Australian tertiary or research institution is required to be approved as a visiting academic sponsor in order to invite academics from overseas. The following requirements must be met for an institution to become an approved sponsor.
Lawfully established and operating in Australia
The Australian tertiary or research institution must be lawfully established and operating in Australia.
An institution can include a body corporate or unincorporated body (other than an individual or a sole trader).
Good business record
To meet this requirement, there must be nothing adverse known about the Australian tertiary or research institution. This means, for example, that if the organisation previously sponsored overseas workers to Australia, the organisation must have a satisfactory record of complying with Australian laws.
Capacity to comply with their sponsorship obligations
The sponsor must have the capacity to comply with sponsorship obligations.
