Nomination Eligibility


The sponsor must lodge a nomination to invite academics from overseas to observe or participate in an Australian research project. The nomination must provide details of the position and the skills, qualifications and experience required by the overseas person who will fill the position.

Nomination requirements

For a nomination to be approved, the nominated person must:

  • have been invited to observe or participate in an Australian research project:
    • at the sponsoring Australian tertiary or research institution, and
    • in collaboration with other academic employed by the sponsoring Australian tertiary or research institution.
  • be employed or have formerly been employed as an academic at a tertiary or research institution overseas and hold or have held a senior academic title
  • have a significant record of achievement in their field.

Supporting documentation

The following documents are required to approve a nomination:

  • a letter of invitation from the sponsoring Australian tertiary or research institution
  • where the academic is currently employed by an overseas tertiary or research institution, a statement from the home institution
  • a list of papers published in recognised journals by the nominated applicant

Letter of invitation

The letter of invitation from the Australian tertiary or research institution should indicate:

  • the period for which the invitation is extended
  • details of the applicant's proposed activities in Australia
  • the nature and amount of any proposed payments by the institution to the applicant.

The structure of academic institutions varies widely. However, the invitation should come from the person with overall administrative authority within the institution. For example from the Registrar, Chief Executive Officer or equivalent central administrative authority of the relevant institution.

Statement from home institution

A statement from the nominated applicant's home institution should confirm the invitation to visit an Australian tertiary or research institution and provide evidence that their leave from their usual academic appointment will be granted.
