What is the Skilled Occupation List?

If you want to apply for any skilled migration visa, you must nominate an occupation which is on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) at the time you lodge your application.

The Skilled Occupation List details the name of the Australian organisation approved to assess a person's skills and/or qualifications for migration purposes for each occupation

See: Skilled Occupation Lists

What is a 'skilled occupation' for migration?

For most skilled migration visas, you will satisfy the 'skilled occupation' requirement if you have the skills and/or qualifications of an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List.

How is the Skilled Occupation List structured?

The Skilled Occupation List lists occupations alphabetically in accordance with their title in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) dictionary.

For each occupation, the list shows:

  • the ANZSCO code for the occupation
  • the relevant assessing authority for the occupation
  • the number of points for skill an occupation is awarded for the "skill" factor under the points test.

Further information on ANZSCO can be found on the department's website.
