Change of circumstances
On this page
If any of your circumstances change, such that an answer in your application or information given to the department is no longer correct, you must inform the department as soon as possible.
You must continue to advise the department of any changes in your circumstances until a decision is made on your application – or, in the case of a visa granted outside Australia, until you travel to Australia and are cleared by immigration.
You can provide this information by writing a letter or email to your case officer and including any additional documentation that is required.
You must identify yourself in your correspondence by quoting your Client and/or Permission Request ID, Transaction Reference Number for electronic applications, and your file number. This information will be provided in your acknowledgement letter.
Important: Your visa may be cancelled if you give incorrect information or fail to advise the department that some information is no longer correct.
Examples of a change in circumstances include:
- new job
- new passport
- new member of your family
- discovery of incorrect information in your application
- change of address or contact details.
You can also advise the department by submitting a completed form relevant to your change of circumstances.

Change of address
You must inform the department in writing of any change of address for either you or your authorised recipient if your residential address will change for more than 14 days.
You must advise the department of the new address and the length of time you or your authorised recipient will be at this new address. The department will send communication about your application to the latest address provided.
It will be taken that this communication has been received:
- seven (7) working days after the date of the letter if that letter was sent to an address in Australia
or - 21 working days after the date of the letter if that letter was sent to an address outside Australia.
If you have provided a fax number or email address, the department may use these to communicate with you if you have authorised us to do so.

Adding secondary applicants to your application
If your child is born after you lodge your application but before a decision has been made, you must inform the department in writing of the details of the newborn child. You must include a certified copy of the child's full birth certificate.
Any secondary applicants added to your application must also meet the eligiblity requirements.
Withdrawing your application
You can withdraw your application by advising the department in writing at any time before a decision is made. Any charges paid at the time of application are usually not refunded.
Abiding by your visa conditions
If you are in Australia while your application is being processed you must continue to meet the conditions of your current visa.
If your current visa is granted subject to conditions, such as restrictions on work or study, you must meet those conditions or your visa may be cancelled.
