Managing Australia's Borders

Yachts

Prior to arrival in Australia from an overseas country, all yachts and superyachts need to provide a Smallcraft Arrival Report to the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (Customs) which details all persons onboard for the purposes of immigration clearance. On arrival and departure all persons on yachts or superyachts will be subject to immigration clearance conducted by Customs.

Important: It is a serious offence for foreign nationals to arrive in Australia (including Christmas or Cocos Keeling Islands) without a valid national passport and a valid visa or travel authority. Persons may be refused entry to Australia and fined AUD $3000 per person.

Entering Australia

On arrival in Australia all foreign nationals need to have all of the following:

  • a valid national passport
  • a valid visa or travel authority
  • a completed Incoming Passenger Card (available from Customs).

Departing Australia

Prior to departure from Australia all foreign nationals need to present both:

  • a valid national passport
    and
  • complete an Outgoing Passenger Card (available from Customs).

Norfolk Island

Foreign nationals travelling to Norfolk Island need to be immigration cleared on departure from mainland Australia and on arrival on Norfolk Island. A multiple entry visa is required for returning to mainland Australia. Customs clearances are required upon re-arrival in mainland Australia.

Christmas and Cocos Islands

Yachts and superyachts travelling between mainland Australia and Christmas Island or Cocos Keeling Island are deemed not to have left Australia if their trip is within 30 days of departure from mainland Australia or these islands. Persons onboard need to ensure their visa covers the entire period of their stay including travel time between mainland Australia and these islands. All yachts and superyachts must present to Customs for clearance on arrival and departure.
