Stowaways

A stowaway is a concealed person on a vessel, or in cargo loaded on to a vessel, without the consent of the ship's owner, master, or any other responsible person.

The master, owner, agent, charterer or operator of the vessel must notify Customs of any stowaways or concealed persons onboard the vessel before arrival in Australia. Failure to report a stowaway may result in a penalty.

Stowaways are to be prevented from disembarking the vessel until a Customs or a departmental officer directs otherwise.
