The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's (DFAT) role is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves working to strengthen Australia's security, enhancing Australia's prosperity and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign and trade policy advice to the government and works with other government agencies to ensure that Australia's pursuit of its global, regional and bilateral interests is coordinated effectively.
