Definitions
- Assurance of Support
- A commitment to provide financial assistance to the applicant and their accompanying spouse and dependent family members so they do not need to rely on any government forms of support for ten (10) years; and repay any recoverable social security payments made to the applicant or their accompanying family members in the first ten (10) years of settlement in Australia.
- Australian mission
- An Australian Embassy, High Commission, Consulate or Consulate-General or Australian Trade Commission.
- Australian permanent resident
- A non-citizen who, being usually resident in Australia, is the holder of a permanent visa.
- Centrelink
- Centrelink is the government department responsible for making social security payments in Australia.
- Close Relative

In relation to a person, means one of the following:
- the spouse of the person
- a child, adopted child, parent, brother or sister of the person
- a step-child, step-parent, step-brother or step-sister of the person.
- Dependant child
- A dependent child means the natural or adopted child, or step-child, of a person (other than a child who has a spouse or is engaged to be married), being a child who:
- has not turned 18
or - has turned 18 and one of the following:
- is dependent on that person
- is incapacitated for work due to the total or partial loss of the child's bodily or mental functions.
- has not turned 18
- Dependant
- A person who is wholly or substantially reliant on the other person for financial support to meet their basic needs of food, shelter and clothing; or wholly or substantially reliant on the other person for financial support due to their being incapacitated for work because of the total or partial loss of bodily or mental functions.
- Eligible New Zealand Citizen
- A New Zealand citizen who at the time of their last entry to Australia would have met their health and character checks and either:
- held a Subclass 444 (Special Category) visa on 26 February 2001
- held a Subclass 444 visa that was in force for at least one year in the two (2) years before 26 February 2001
- has a certificate, issued under the Social Security Act 1991, that states the citizen, for the purposes of the Migration Act, was residing in Australia on a particular date.
- Guardian
- In relation to a child, means a person who:
- has responsibility for the long-term welfare of the child
and - has, in relation to the child, all the powers, rights and duties that are vested by law or custom in the guardian of a child, other than:
- the right to have the daily care and control of the child
and - the right and responsibility to make decisions concerning the daily care and control of the child.

- has responsibility for the long-term welfare of the child
- Settled
- A person is considered settled if they are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen who is lawfully resident in Australia for a reasonable period. In normal circumstances, two (2) years is considered to be a reasonable period.
- Sponsor
A sponsor commits to providing support to the applicant and any accompanying family members during their first two (2) years of residence in Australia, including accommodation and financial assistance to meet living costs.
The person must be a settled Australian citizen, settled Australian permanent resident or settled eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Spouse
- The person you are married to, or in a de facto relationship with. You are in a de facto relationship if you have been living with a person of the opposite sex for at least 12 months immediately prior to the date of application, and the department is satisfied that you have a genuine, exclusive and continuing relationship.
- Step-child
- In relation to a parent, means either of the following:
- A child of the parent who is not the natural or adopted child or adopted child of the parent but who is the natural or adopted child of the parent's current spouse
- A child of the parent who is not the natural or adpoted child of the parent but:
- who is the natural or adopted child of a former spouse of the parent
and - who has not turned 18
and - in relation to whom the parent has either one of the following:
- a residence order in force under the Family Law Act 1975
- a specific issues order in force under the Family Law Act 1975 under which the parent is responsible for the child's long-term or day-to-day care, welfare and development
- guardianship or custody, whether jointly or otherwise, under a Commonwealth, State or Territory law or a law in force in a foreign country.
- who is the natural or adopted child of a former spouse of the parent
