After You Lodge Your Application


After you have lodged your application, you will receive a letter from the department confirming receipt of the application and details of what you need to do next.

Interview requirements

If you are required to attend an interview you must bring your passport and all outstanding documentation with you. The application will be assessed at the interview, and where possible, a decision will be made.

Invitation to comment

If another person gives the department information that could result in you being refused a visa, the department will give you an opportunity to comment on the information. You will need to comment by a set date.

Change of circumstances

If your circumstances change, you must inform the department (in writing) as soon as possible if:

  • you change residential address for longer than 14 days
  • the composition of their family changes as a result of birth, death or change in relationship status (married, divorced, entered a de facto relationship, separated), etc
  • your or your family members intend to travel either to or from Australia while their visa application is being processed
  • if the circumstances of your sponsor or assurer change.

Visa decision

If your visa is approved, you will receive a grant notification letter at your nominated email or postal address. This letter will contain:

  • your Visa Grant Number
  • the validity date of the visa
  • the visa conditions
  • full details of what you must do next.

If your visa is not approved, will receive a letter at your nominated email or postal address. This letter will contain:

  • the reason for the decision
  • your review rights (including whether it is your or your sponsor who can apply for review)
  • the time limit for lodging an appeal.
