After You Lodge Your Application


After you have lodged your application, you will receive a letter from the department confirming receipt of your application and details of what you need to do next.

Interview requirements

If you are required to attend an interview you must bring your passport and all outstanding documentation with you.

Invitation to comment

If another person gives the department information that could result in you being refused a visa, the department will give you an opportunity to comment on the information. You will need to comment by a set date.

Change of circumstances

You must inform the department in writing as soon as possible if:

  • the composition of your family changes as a result of birth, death or change in relationship status (married, divorce, entered a de facto relationship, separated)
  • you or any other applicant included in your application intend to travel either to or from Australia while your visa application is being processed
  • the circumstances of your sponsor or assurer changes.

If you change residential address for longer than 14 days you must inform the department in writing or by telephoning the general enquiries line.

Visa decision

If the visa is approved

If your visa is approved, you will receive a letter at your nominated email or postal address. This letter will contain:

  • your Visa Grant Number
  • the validity date of your visa
  • the visa conditions
  • full details on what to do next.

If your visa is not approved

If your visa is not approved, you will receive a letter at your nominated email or postal address. This letter will contain:

  • the reason(s) for the refusal
  • your right to seek review by the Migration Review Tribunal (MRT) (including whether it is you or your sponsor who can apply for review)
  • the time limit seeking review by the MRT.
