A
- ASCO
- Australian Standard Classification of Occupations as published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Settler arrivals by occupation have been classified using the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) Second Edition. There are three supplementary groups not included in this official ABS classification to cover persons without formal occupation. These are:
- 'Not in Employment' refers to persons who have stated that they have been unemployed without providing an adequate occupation description.
- 'Not in the Labour Force' includes children, persons stating 'home duties' as their occupation, students and retired persons.
- 'Not Stated' refers to those persons whose occupation description is not sufficiently specific to enable the allocation of precise ASCO codes.

- Australian Resident
- A person identifiying themselves as an 'Australian resident' when completing an Incoming or an Outgoing Passenger Card. This excludes persons travelling on Temporary Entry visas.

- Settler Arrival – Arrival of a person intending to settle in Australia

- Long term Visitor Arrival – Arrival of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant intending to stay in Australia for 12 months or more before their next departure
- Short Term Resident Return – Arrival of a person identified on the Incoming Passenger Card as an Australian resident who has been overseas for less than 12 months since their last departure from Australia
- Short Term Visitor Arrival – Arrival of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant intending to stay in Australia less than 12 months before their next departure
- Permanent Departure – Departure of a person identified on the Outgoing Passenger card as an Australian resident intending to permanently depart from Australia
- Long Term Resident Departure – Departure of a person identified on the Outgoing Passenger Card as an Australian resident who is intending to stay overseas for 12 months or more before returning to Australia
- Long term Visitor Departure – Departure of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant whose stay in Australia was for 12 months or more from their previous arrival
- Short Term Resident Departure – Departure of a person identified on the Outgoing Passenger Card as an Australian resident who is intending to stay overseas for less than 12 months before returning to Australia
- Short Term Visitor Departure – Departure of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant whose stay in Australia was for less than 12 months from their previous arrival.
F
- Family Migration
- Persons who have arrived in Australia under the family stream of the migration program. These are people intending to get married, partners, children, parents and other family members who have been sponsored by a relative who is an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an elgible New Zealand citizen.
H
- Humanitarian
- Entrants to Australia under the Humanitarian Program. This program is comprised of two components: offshore resettlement for people in humanitarian need overseas; and onshore protection for those people already in Australia who arrived on temporary visas or in an unauthorised manner, and who claim Australia's protection. The Humanitarian component of settler arrivals data includes only those persons with offshore resettlement visas.

- Long Term Resident Departure
- Departure of a person identified on the Outgoing Passenger Card as an Australian resident who is intending to stay overseas for 12 months or more before returning to Australia.
- Long Term Resident Return
- Arrival of a person identified on the Incoming Passenger Card as an Australian resident who has been overseas for 12 months or more since their last departure from Australia.
- Long Term Visitor Arrival
- Arrival of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant intending to stay in Australia for 12 months or more before their next departure.
- Long Term Visitor Departure
- Departure of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant whose stay in Australia was for 12 months or more from their previous arrival.
M
- Main Visa Category
- Statistical grouping of temporary entrants, based on type of visa. This includes:
- Temporary Residents – These include working holiday makers, long term temporary business entrants and other persons intending to work or temporarily reside in Australia. These types of temporary resident visas are granted on the basis of there being an economic, social, cultural or sporting benefit to Australia. Initial stay in Australia is generally for more than 3 months but not more than 4 years
- Students – Non-permanent entrants to Australia whose visa is for a specific period and for the purpose of undertaking formal or non-formal study
- Visitors – Non-permanent entrants to Australia whose visa is for tourism, short stay business, visiting relatives or medical treatment.
- Migration Stream
- Statistical grouping of permanent arrivals based on type of visa. ('Migration Stream' is also known as 'Eligibility Category'). The groups are:
- Family Migration – Persons who have arrived in Australia under the family stream of the migration program . These are people intending to get married, partners, children, parents and other family members who have been sponsored by a relative who is an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an elgible New Zealand citizen.
- Skill Migration – Persons who have arrived in Australia under the Skill Stream of the migration program. The Skill Stream consists of a number of categories for prospective migrants where there is demand in Australia for their particular occupational skills and they are nominated by an employer, or apply under general skilled migration or regional migration, have outstanding talents (outstanding records of achievement in a profession, occupation, the arts or sport) or have business skills.
- Special Eligibility – Persons who are former Australian permanent residents, and persons who served in the Australian Armed Forces before 1981, returning to Australia permanently. Prior to July 2000 this category also included former Australian citizens and family of New Zealand citizens. 'Special Eligibility' currently consists of 'Former Resident' visa only.
- Total Migration – The number of settlers who have arrived in Australia under the Migration Program ie the aggregate of settler arrivals in Family Migration, Skill Migration and Special Eligibility This figure excludes 'Humanitarian' and 'Other' settlers.
- Humanitarian – Entrants to Australia under the Humanitarian Program. - NZ citizen – New Zealand citizens entering under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement.
- Other – Primarily children born to Australian citizens overseas. This also includes residents of Norfolk Island and persons granted Australian citizenship overseas.

- Settler
- A person arriving in Australia who holds one of the following:
- a permanent visa
- a temporary (provisional) visa where there is a clear intention to settle eg. Intending Marriage visa
- a New Zealand citizen who indicates an intention to settle
- a person otherwise eligible to settle (eg an overseas-born child of Australian citizens).
- Short Term Resident Departure
- Departure of a person identified on the Outgoing Passenger Card as an Australian resident who is intending to stay overseas for less than 12 months before returning to Australia.
- Short Term Resident Return
- Arrival of a person identified on the Incoming Passenger Card as an Australian resident who has been overseas for less than 12 months since their last departure from Australia.
- Short Term Visitor Arrival
- Arrival of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant intending to stay in Australia less than 12 months before their next departure.
- Short Term Visitor Departure
- Departure of a person who is a visitor or temporary entrant whose stay in Australia was for less than 12 months from their previous arrival.
- Skill Migration
- Persons who have arrived in Australia under the Skill Stream of the migration program. - Temporary Entry
- The Temporary Entry Program allows people from overseas to come to Australia on a temporary basis for specific purposes which result in some benefit to Australia. Main categories are 'Students', 'Temporary Residents' and 'Visitors'.
- Temporary Residents
- These include working holiday makers, long term temporary business entrants and other persons intending to work or temporarily reside in Australia. These types of temporary resident visas are granted on the basis of there being an economic, social, cultural or sporting benefit to Australia. Initial stay in Australia is generally for more than 3 months but not more than 4 years.
- Total Migration

- Visitors (Category of traveller)
- A person who is a visitor or temporary entrant as indicated on an Incoming or an Outgoing Passenger Card. This is consistent with Australian Bureau of Statistics usage.
- Visitors (Main visa category)
- Non-permanent entrants to Australia whose visa is for tourism, short stay business, visiting relatives or medical treatment.
W
- Working Holiday
- The Working Holiday and Work & Holiday Programs provide opportunities for people between 18 and 30 to holiday in Australia and to supplement their travel funds through incidental employment.
