Settlement

Summary of findings for LSIA 3

Almost 90 per cent of those surveyed lived in capital cities, with Sydney (37 per cent of migrants) and Melbourne (26 per cent of migrants) being the most popular destinations.

Migrants surveyed in LSIA 3 have overwhelmingly positive views about life in Australia.  In wave two of LSIA 3

  • 98 per cent said that they had been made to feel welcome since coming to Australia – an increase of four per cent from wave one
  • 96 per cent said that they felt that they were settling into Australian society.

Other positive indicators of successful settlement were:

Interactions with neighbours – In wave two of LSIA 3 only seven per cent of those surveyed said that they do not speak with their neighbours, whereas more than 30 per cent said that they speak with more than five of their neighbours.

Participation in community activities – more than 70 per cent in wave one and 85 per cent in wave two participated in at least one of the following activities:

  • Religious activities
  • School activities
  • Activities arranged by people from their home country
  • Local community activities
  • Activities involving sports or hobbies

Having more positive things to say - Recent migrants could more readily identify things that they liked about Australia than things they disliked. For example, the three things most liked about Australia were:

  • The Australian people (34 per cent of those surveyed)
  • Australia’s climate (32 per cent)
  • Australia’s lifestyle (23 per cent)

Whereas the things that were most disliked about Australia were:

  • Nothing (35 per cent)
  • Australia’s climate (9 per cent)
  • Cost of living (8 per cent)

Progress up the housing scale – Between wave one and wave two of LSIA 3, there was some progression up the housing scale.  Fewer people were living with a sponsor/relative and more people were paying off or owning their home. Renting however still remained the most common form of tenure.
