Housing
Summary of findings for LSIA 2
Across both waves, migrants from the Humanitarian and the Independent groups were more likely than other migrants to be living in flats or units, and less likely to be living in a separate dwelling. They are also more likely to be renting their accommodation and are the groups that are least satisfied with the quality of their accommodation.
Home ownership increased between Wave 1 and Wave 2. In Wave 1 only 16% of Primary Applicants owned or were paying off their own home. By Wave 2, this figure was 29%. Rates of Home ownership were highest for migrants from the Business Skills/ENS group - almost two-thirds either owned their own home or were paying it off by the end of Wave 2.
In Wave 2, although the median cost of housing for migrants from the Humanitarian group is only $149 per week on average - this represents over a third of the gross income of the migrating unit. For migrants from the Independent and the Business Skills and Employer Nomination scheme, the corresponding figures were 21% and 13% respectively.
