Summary of findings for LSIA 2

Migrants are generally happy with their life in Australia and are happier in Australia than in their former home country. In Wave 2, of the LSIA -

  • 94% of Primary Applicants stated they were either satisfied or very satisfied with Australian life
  • 47% indicated greater satisfaction with life in Australia compared with their former home country
  • Only 16% indicated they were more satisfied with life in their former home country.

By Wave 2, only 1% of Primary Applicants felt they made the wrong decision in migrating to Australia. On the other hand four-fifths of Primary Applicants would encourage others to migrate to Australia.

Although the overwhelming majority of migrants intend to apply for citizenship the level of commitment varied significantly among different visa groups. For example in Wave 2, 98% of Primary Applicants from the Humanitarian group indicated that they would apply for citizenship, compared with only 72% from the Business Skills and Employer Nomination Scheme group.

Among Primary Applicants not intending to apply for citizenship, the main reasons given were a desire to retain citizenship in their former home country (56% of Primary Applicants in Wave 2) and a desire to retain their current passport (26%).

For both Waves, around one in five Primary Applicants indicated they had been in contact with the department. Of these, around 90% indicated that they were satisfied with the service they received and around 80% indicated that their dealings with the department were 'quite friendly' or better.
