Summary of findings for LSIA 2

At Wave 1 of LSIA 2, the proportion of migrants by visa category is as follows: Preferential Family/Family Stream (34%), Independent (29%), Concessional Family/Skilled-Australia Linked (13%), Humanitarian (12%) and Business Skills and Employer Nomination Scheme (11%).

The most common birthplaces overall were the United Kingdom (12% of all migrants), China (10%) and India and South Africa (both 8%).

Between individual visa groups birthplaces varied widely. For example, for the Humanitarian group, the main birthplaces of Primary Applicants were Bosnia/Herzegovina (22%), Iraq (17%) and Croatia (16%). On the other hand, migrants from the Business Skills and Employer Nomination Scheme originated mainly from Indonesia (28% of Primary Applicants), Taiwan (13%) and South Africa (12%).

Humanitarian migrants and migrants from the Business Skills and Employer Nomination Scheme tended to arrive in larger groups - by Wave 2 the average size of their migrating units were 3.2 and 3.7 persons respectively. On the other hand, the vast majority (83%) of Preferential Family/Family Stream migrants arrived in Australia on their own.
