This report provides arrivals statistics for 1999-2000 of persons who entered Australia holding temporary entry visas. Stock data are also provided on the numbers of temporary entrants in Australia as at 30 June 1999 and 30 June 2000. Category Jumping
This special report was prepared for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and the Australian Bureau of Statistics by Siew-Ean Khoo and Peter McDonald of the Demography Program at the Australian National University. It examines the current methodology and assumptions used in estimating category jumping. It looks at the trend in category jumping, its two components and its effect on net overseas migration and the estimated resident population. The study also investigates the approaches used in other countries similar to Australia to estimate net overseas migration.
