National Agenda for a Multicultural Australia

Community relations

While it is important to address structural issues in Australia's multicultural society, it is also necessary to take measures to promote better community relations.

This involves not only relations between 'Anglo-Celtic' and 'non Anglo-Celtic' Australians but, just as importantly, relations between and within the individual cultural, language and birthplace groups that comprise contemporary Australia.

Intolerance is not the preserve of any particular group. Multiculturalism imposes responsibilities as well as conferring rights: acceptance of one's own cultural identity implies a concomitant requirement to respect the identity of others.
