Australia-Malaysia transfer arrangement

The Australian and Malaysian governments signed a groundbreaking agreement on 25 July 2011 to combat people smuggling and provide protection to genuine refugees. The arrangement provides for the transfer from Australia to Malaysia of up to 800 irregular maritime arrivals and formalises Australia's commitment to accept 1000 additional genuine refugees from Malaysia every year for the next four years.

Immigration hotline for relatives of Indonesian boat sinking

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has activated a dedicated hotline – 1300 724 010 – to receive details from members of the Australian community who believe they may know someone who was a passenger on a vessel which was reported to have sunk in Indonesian waters on December 18.
