Queensland Police and Sudanese youth to 'Bridge the gap'
Media Release - 8 February 2008
More than 500 people are expected to converge at Greenslopes Annerley Football Club on Sunday (subs: February 10) as the Queensland Police take on local Sudanese youth in a soccer match aimed at fostering stronger community relations.
The initiative was a positive step in bringing the wider Brisbane community together in a climate of acceptance, inclusion and diversity, a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman said.
‘Not only is this soccer match a fun and positive event, it also seeks to break down perceived barriers between new and emerging groups and local authorities,’ the spokesman said.
‘The match will assist some of our most recent arrivals to feel comfortable with approaching local police for help and assistance without feeling a sense of fear and mistrust.
‘I commend the Queensland Police and the Brisbane Sudanese community for coming together to organise this event. The soccer match showcases unity, connectedness and most importantly that the police are here to help.’
The ‘Bridging the gap’ soccer match kicks off at 11 am, February 10 at Annerley Football Club, Ekibin Reserve, Ridge Street, Greenslopes.
The event is supported by the Queensland Police Service, DIAC, Brisbane City Council and the Police Credit Union.
