Olympians guest at Black and White Ball

Media Release - 17 August 2007

Distinguished former Australian Olympians Raelene Boyle and Nicole Livingstone and leading gynaecological cancer specialist Neville Hacker will be among the special guests attending the inaugural DIAC Black and White Ball in Canberra this weekend.

The ball at the Australian War Memorial's ANZAC Hall from 7 pm on Saturday will raise money for the National Ovarian Cancer Network – OvCa Australia – and the ACT regional branch of the organisation which promotes cancer protection and gives a voice to people dealing with the disease.

Raelene Boyle is an Olympic sprint medallist who has survived two bouts of cancer. She was named one of Australia's 100 Living Treasures in 1998 and carried the torch at the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Nicole Livingstone began her international swimming career at the age of 14 in 1985. She swam for Australia for 11 years before moving on to represent athletes, develop strategies for Australian swimming, and host television sport.

After the death of her mother in 2001, Nicole became a founding director of OvCa Australia. She is now the organisation's patron.

Neville Hacker is a NSW University oncology professor, a director of the Gynaecological Cancer Centre at the Royal Hospital for Women, and a clinician to many cancer patients in the ACT region.

Organisers say the ball will raise money for OvCa Australia's mission to save women's lives, raise awareness of the disease, and support people affected by it.
