Harmony Day footy clinic promotes understanding

Media Release - 19 March 2007

Australian and SA league football players will attend a special Aussie Rules coaching clinic for junior footballers to celebrate Harmony Day in Port Augusta.

The event follows a Department of Immigration and Citizenship grant to the South Augusta Football Club for a 2007 Living in Harmony project promoting community understanding and tolerance.  Port Augusta’s Community Harmony Office is also supporting the event.

Other activities in the 2007 Port Augusta Living in Harmony project include:
- feedback from indigenous players about ways to encourage indigenous participation and recognise needs,
- identifying future indigenous leaders and inviting them to participate in leadership roles in the club with support through formal training and mentoring,
- formulating profiles of past indigenous club champions, and
- recognising indigenous champions and achievers at the club’s presentation night.

Harmony Day is an opportunity to harness the enthusiasm of young Australians and encourage values of mutual respect, goodwill and team work.

It is celebrated across Australia every year on March 21 to bring people together to promote Australian values and to celebrate the Australian way of life.

The day aims to promote understanding of commitment to the benefits of living in a country that embraces respect, fairness, participation, acceptance and a fair go for all.

Players from Port Power, North Adelaide and the Spencer Gulf League will attend the Port Augusta coaching clinic at Central Oval from 4pm on March 20. Media can arrange to attend by phoning 08 8642 4565.

Both male and female juniors are invited to the session with the SANFL and AFL players. Sports vouchers will be won by two juniors who attend. The session will be followed by a free barbecue for juniors at 5.30pm.

Members of the community are invited to hear the visiting players speak at a senior players’ dinner from 7pm.
