Attracting skilled workers to Alice Springs

Media Release - 12 February 2007

Employers in the Alice Springs area will be able to learn more about attracting skilled workers and migrants to the region during a visit by officers from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) this week.

DIAC officers will be available to meet with local employers today and tomorrow, to provide them with information on how to attract and retain valuable skilled employees.

DIAC regional outreach officer Mary Kenny said skilled migration has economic and social benefits for regional Australia and the Australian Government has a range of initiatives to attract migrants to regional areas.

‘There are a number of options local employers can explore, including the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, which allows permanent entry for skilled workers in regional Australia,’ Ms Kenny said.

‘Another option is the subclass 457 temporary skilled worker visa, which allows skilled workers to come to Australia for up to four years with their families.’

Employers wishing to make an appointment should contact DIAC on (08) 8946 3172.

DIAC is also hosting a free evening forum on skilled migration at Noonies in The Diplomat from 6pm till 8pm tonight.

The forum is being conducted in partnership with the Department of Business, Economic and Regional Development and the Chamber of Commerce – Northern Territory.

More information about skilled migration is available.
