Bass Hill Celebrates Harmony Day
Media Release - DPS 25/2003
The people of Bass Hill celebrated Harmony Day 2003 and said no to racism with a colourful performance involving participants in the Bankstown Talent Advancement Project (TAP) at Bass Hill Plaza on Tuesday 18 March.
The performance of the TAP, organised by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs NSW in conjunction with Woolworths Bass Hill, the Department of Education & Training and Bankstown City Council, involved performances by children of songs that embraced the Harmony Day theme of cultural diversity and community harmony.
A Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs spokesperson said that there has never been a more important time for Australians to turn to each other, not against each other.
'Harmony Day is the ideal time to recognise the importance of cultural harmony, and children such as those participating today, play an important role in fostering unity within our community,' the spokesperson said.
Harmony Day, on 21 March, is part of the Commonwealth Government's Living in Harmony initiative. It provides Australians with an opportunity to get to know each other better by promoting our community's success as a multicultural society.
TAP is a joint community project of Bankstown City Council and
the NSW Department of Education & Training where selected students
receive mentoring and guidance from experts within the performing
arts industry through workshops.
