Fire at Christmas Island Reception Centre

Media Release - DPS 95/2002

In response to negative decisions on their appeals, detainees at the Christmas Island reception centre damaged and set fire to buildings last night.

After breaking windows and damaging parts of the mess hall, detainees then set fire to accommodation blocks around midnight. The fire was contained within the centre and extinguished within a few hours.

Investigations into the incident are under way.

Options for repair and/or recommission of damaged buildings are being considered. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.

No injuries were reported and all detainees and staff are safe and accounted for.

Alternative accommodation arrangements are being explored.
