Manila Embassy Closure Prompts New Visa Arrangements

Media Release - DPS 92/2002

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA), has implemented alternative processing arrangements for people applying for visas to travel to Australia, in the Philippines.

The new arrangements have been necessary because of the temporary closure of the Australian Embassy in Manila on 28 November 2002.

For the time being, apart from tourist visas, no new visa applications can be lodged. However, existing tourist visa applications made before 27 November 2002 and new tourist visa applications for Australia will still be processed. Processing of migration and student applications has been temporarily suspended.

A special courier service will pick-up and deliver tourist visa applications during the closure. There is a charge for this service. Applicants in the Philippines seeking a visitor visa, should call 1909 362 2779 for more information.

People who lodged tourist visa applications after 20 November 2002 can expect a two or three week delay in processing. In addition people over 70 years of age or those who need to provide additional documentation should also be prepared for delays in tourist visa processing.

In an emergency, for example a death in the family, where a visa is required urgently, people can contact the call centre on the number above for further information. Please note that this number is not available from a mobile phone or from outside the Philippines.
