Asylum Decisions Handed Down on Nauru

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) announced today that a further eight asylum seekers on Nauru had received decisions from the Australian Government on their asylum claims last week.
Of these, one Afghan asylum seeker was found to be a refugee. The remaining seven asylum seekers were found not to be refugees.
"Only three asylum seekers in the Australian Nauru caseload are yet to receive a decision on their claims. These decisions will be finalised as soon as possible,"a departmental spokesperson said.
The Department also announced that 18 asylum seekers on Nauru received the outcome of their review decision on their asylum claims from the Australian Government. All the review decisions affirmed the initial refugee status assessment that the asylum seekers were found not to be refugees.
Asylum seekers being processed by UNHCR have also received review decisions on their asylum claims. Of the 83 persons who received review decisions, 46 have been found to be refugees.
Under the Refugees Convention, refugee status is conferred where there is a current or foreseeable need for protection. People who are not in need of protection will be expected to return to their country of origin as soon as circumstances permit.
People on Nauru have been provided with detailed information sessions covering the decision process, the implications of the decisions and procedures for review of the initial refugee status assessment.
