More Asylum Decisions Handed Down on Nauru

Media Release - DPS 38/2002

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) announced today that a further 360 Afghan asylum seekers and 12 asylum seekers of other nationalities on Nauru had received decisions from the Australian Government on their asylum claims this week.

Of these, 14 Afghans and one of another nationality were found to be refugees.

A further 24 decisions were handed down by UNHCR.

The decisions bring to some 1,140 the total number of decisions handed down on the asylum seekers taken to Nauru (see attached table).

Only ten asylum seekers on Nauru are yet to receive a decision on their claims. These decisions will be finalised in the coming weeks.

All of those who are found not to be refugees will have the opportunity to obtain counselling on their options, and are able to request a review of the decision if they wish.

So far 305 asylum seekers on Manus Island have received a decision on their claims, leaving around 30 still awaiting a decision. These decisions will also be handed down in the coming weeks.
