Contract Signed for Christmas Island Detention Facility

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) today announced the results of tender processes for the design and construction of the Christmas Island Immigration Reception and Processing Centre (IRPC).
The Walter Construction Group has been awarded the contract for the design and construction of what will be the first purpose designed and built IRPC in Australia. The Walter Group was selected following a rigorous select tender process involving companies which were suggested to DIMIA as having the appropriate experience to undertake the project.
The design will be based on a concept developed by Phillips Smith Conwell Architects Pty Ltd. The design concept was assessed by DIMIA as being an excellent response to the design brief issued in April to four architectural firms which were selected last year following an open tender process.
Development of the facility was announced on 12 March 2002 by the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Philip Ruddock. The facility, to accommodate up to 1200 people, is planned to be completed in early 2003, with a first stage providing capacity for up to 400 to be available by the end of 2002.
