Government importing AIDS threat, 15-5-06
Letter to the Editor - The West Australian
15 May 2006
Dear Sir/Madam
Frank Riley’s letter (Government importing AIDS threat 12-5-06) highlights a lack of awareness surrounding health screening and Australia’s humanitarian and refugee program.
The fact is all permanent entrants to Australia – including refugees – are subjected to stringent health screening prior to entering the country.
These tests are regarded as the most stringent in the world.
As part of the visa assessment process, all permanent entrants must undergo
a medical examination, an x-ray (if aged 11 or over) and an HIV/AIDS test (if
aged 15 or over).
In August 2005 the Australian Government introduced a second medical examination
about three days before travel to Australia for refugee and humanitarian
visa holders.
The department is committed to providing the most comprehensive health assessment it possibly can for all entrants to Australia.
