Please Explain, 6-05-06

Letter to the Editor - The West Australian
8 May 2006

Dear Sir/Madam

Lest your readers be misinformed by the overseas student’s concern (Please Explain, 6-05-06) about work vs volunteering, let me explain.

International students may apply for permission to work up to 20 hours a week during their studies. This gives students the opportunity to gain experience in the Australian workforce and supplement their income, while remaining focused on their study.

However, during holiday periods and after students have graduated, they can work unlimited hours. Students can undertake this work in either a paid or volunteer capacity.

Hence, if S. Choo has now graduated and is awaiting a decision on permanent residency, there is nothing stopping S. Choo volunteering and working as much as Mr/Ms Choo would like!
