Migrant health tests linked to outbreaks, 29/3/06
Letter to the Editor - The West Australian
30 March 2006
Dear Sir/Madam
Dr Charles Watson's comments about migrant health screening (Migrant health tests linked to outbreaks, 29/3/06) are a welcome antidote to your series of misinformed stories about the issue.
In particular it was pleasing to read Dr Watson's support for current health screening arrangements. It is disappointing that his sensible and realistic views were not reported earlier, as they confirm much of the information supplied numerous times to your reporters by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
The department takes direction on health matters, including screenings, from national and international health experts and has in place processes to protect Australia from potential health risks, thereby alleviating pressure on Medicare. In this regard, all permanent visa holders coming to Australia are required to have health examinations.
In addition, all temporary entrants are required to declare their medical conditions. Examinations are carried out on a case-by-case basis based on a person's medical history or country of origin.
Dr Watson's comments underline the vital role played by existing migrant health screening processes.
