Skilled Migrants

Letter to the Editor - Australian
18 April 2005

Dear Sir/Madam

In an otherwise accurate article (Migrants to rescue on skills, Australian, 15/4/05), your newspaper suggests the federal government will this year drop requirements for English language, age and general skill levels. This is not quite correct.

The 10 bonus points for a Skilled Independent Regional will enable states/regions to access a wider range of skilled people. Some skilled people may be a little older (for example, over 30, but under 45 years of age). However, these people will only be issued a visa if they have the skills and attributes that sponsoring states/regions want. The 10 bonus points recognise the value of state/regional sponsorship and support.
