Cornelia Rau
Letter to the Editor - The West Australian
15 March 2005
Dear Sir/Madam
Immigration officials did not ignore a psychiatrist’s advice that Cornelia Rau be treated in hospital (New Claims that Rau advice was ignored, 14/3/05).
Health staff at Baxter followed both recommendations of the psychiatrist, Dr Andrew Frucasz. He advised that referral for a fuller assessment as an inpatient would be preferable, or that further monitoring at Baxter continue. He did not indicate her case was urgent.
This assessment was accepted and both options were acted upon.
Within days, discussions to pursue an inpatient assessment were held with SA Mental Health Services through Rural and Remote Services at Glenside in an attempt to have Ms Rau assessed.
Baxter health staff followed up with Glenside in early January after receiving no response, and these discussions led to SA health authorities deciding that this was not a case requiring involuntary scheduling.
Ms Rau was asked if she would go for inpatient assessment voluntarily, and refused.
Further discussions with Glenside resulted in her involuntary scheduling on 3 February, 2005, on the same day that Ms Rau was identified.
