Ms Khouri's visa facts
Letter to the Editor - Sydney Morning Herald
18 August 2004
Dear Sir/Madam
Malcolm Knox might want to check his facts before he criticises immigration processes (A brave decision after the denials, 18/8).
Alleged 'literary crimes' do not necessarily equate to crimes against the Migration Act.
The Distinguished Talent visa allows for recognition of publicly acknowledged talent and success, not literary validity. It is not the department's role to make judgements on content. And, of course, as Mr Knox should know well, Ms Khouri's book enjoyed considerable success at the time her visa was assessed.
And his attempt to compare Ms Khouri's circumstances with those of illegal boat arrivals is nonsensical. Despite numerous reports in the media, Ms Khouri has never sought, and has never been the holder of, a temporary protection visa in Australia.
