Government applies law uniformly

Letter to the Editor - The Sun Herald
21 July 2003

Dear Sir/Madam

Andrew West (Kicked out after a lifetime in Australia, 20 July) should understand the Government is obliged to apply migration law uniformly and cannot customise it to suit individuals.

The process for cancelling the visas of individuals because they fail to meet the character requirements of the Migration Act and removing them from Australia is not undertaken lightly. All evidence is examined thoroughly before a decision is made, including links with the Australian community, family ties and the rights of any children.

All of these factors are weighed-up against the history and nature of the crimes committed.

Non-citizens granted a visa to enter and remain in Australia are expected to obey Australian laws. In this regard, people who choose to engage in criminal activity, whether they are Australian citizens or not, should be prepared for the consequences of their actions.
