Accompanied and Unaccompanied Minors
Children and where possible, their families, will not be detained in an immigration detention centre. They are moved into alternative arrangements if their status cannot be resolved quickly. Arrangements with non-government organisations are made to place families with children in the community under community detention arrangements.
If a child does not have a parent or relative over the age of 21 years to care for them in Australia, non-government organisations are contracted to provide care and services to them.
In line with community standards, children in detention have access to primary and secondary schooling, including English language classes.
