Managing Australia's Borders

Community Detention

Detention policy is administered with flexibility, fairness and in a timely manner.

Arrangements introduced in 2005 provide for these requirements:

  • the detention of families with children is to take place in the community under community detention rather than in immigration detention centres
  • all primary protection visa decisions and reviews by the Refugee Review Tribunal (RRT) occur within three months of the application
  • the Ombudsman and the Parliament is advised every six months on the status of people in detention for two or more years.
