Managing Australia's Borders

Alternative Detention Arrangements

Alternative detention arrangements in the community form part of the more flexible arrangements within the immigration detention network, allowing better management of a person’s immigration detention to suit their individual needs and family circumstances.

Immigration Residential Housing

Immigration residential housing in Sydney adjacent to the Villawood immigration detention centre opened mid 2006 and the Perth immigration residential housing was opened in 2007.

Immigration residential housing provides a more domestic environment, enabling more autonomy, such as in preparing meals. In addition to the usual recreational and social activities, people are also able to go shopping and participate in community events.

Alternative temporary detention in the community

Where accommodation in immigration residential housing is not appropriate the department utilises a range of detention options which can include detention in the community with a designated person in private houses, correctional facilities, watch houses, hotels, apartments, foster care or in hospitals.
