Alternative Detention Arrangements
There is a suite of immigration detention placements available to people subject to Immigration Detention. Alternative detention arrangements form part of the more flexible arrangements within the immigration detention network, allowing better management of a person's immigration detention to suit their individual needs and family circumstances.
Immigration Residential Housing
Immigration Residential Housing provides a flexible and supportive housing environment for people in immigration detention and allows them greater personal autonomy. The benefit of domestic-style Immigration Residential Housing accommodation is that people are able to cook their own food and control many aspects of their household. In addition to the usual recreational and social activities, people are also able to go shopping and participate in community events.
Immigration Residential Housing accommodation is currently available in Sydney (opened in August 2006), Perth (opened in March 2007) and Port Augusta (opened April 2010).
Immigration Transit Accommodation
Immigration Transit Accommodation provides hostel-style accommodation for people whose immigration pathway is likely to be resolved quickly. People in Immigration Transit Accommodation receive three meals a day and can make snacks for themselves throughout the day. The detention services provider is contracted to provide programs and activities for people in Immigration Transit Accommodation, including onsite recreational facilities.
The Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation became operational on 1 November 2007, and the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation commenced operations on 20 June 2008. A further Immigration Transit Accommodation is planned for Adelaide.
Alternative temporary detention in the community
The department also has the option to use a range of alternative temporary detention accommodation options in the community. These can include detention in the community with a detention service provider officer or a designated person in private houses, hotels, apartments, foster care or in hospitals.
