Managing Australia's Borders

Sydney Immigration Residential Housing at Villawood (NSW)

Opened in 2006, the Sydney Immigration Residential Housing is located within the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.

Participation in a immigration residential housing by people in immigration detention is voluntary. It is dependent on satisfactory completion of health and character checks, and an assessment that the individuals have the capacity to participate in a positive way and comply with the relevant security requirements of the centre.

Immigration Residential Housing allows detainees to live in a more domestic environment and permits a greater degree of autonomy over their life while remaining formally in immigration detention.

Accommodation and facilities

The Sydney Immigration Residential Housing comprises single storey dwellings capable of accommodating different family compositions. There are four duplex houses (eight units) each consisting of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen and two living/dining areas.

The layout of the duplexes maximises the amount of privacy for people in immigration residential housing. Each duplex is fully self-contained to enable independent living. Small outdoor areas adjacent to each house allow a level of privacy without interfering with security. One home is configured to accommodate people with disabilities.

An additional building is provided for communal use and also for administration purposes.

The backyards of the houses are integrated as a single large landscaped area. The landscaping is consistent with the surrounding natural and constructed environment. Provision is made for people to access the recreation and educational facilities of the surrounding areas.

Security is modern and unobtrusive and the facility is surrounded by a typical suburban fence.

All operational and maintenance aspects of the centre are undertaken by the Detention Services Provider.
