Scherger Immigration Detention Centre

The Scherger Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) was opened in October 2010 and is located at the Scherger RAAF Base, approximately 30 kilometres east of Weipa, Queensland.

The Scherger IDC is currently used to house single adult male Irregular Maritime Arrivals (IMAs).

Accommodation and facilities

Accommodation at the Scherger Immigration Detention Centre includes an administration block and three air conditioned client accommodation blocks, comprising a total of 200 rooms. Additional temporary accommodation has been added to the site.

Other amenities include:

  • tennis court
  • swimming pool
  • mini soccer field
  • beach volleyball court
  • religious rooms
  • medical support buildings
  • recreation rooms, which contain games, DVDs, game consoles and televisions
  • internet facilities.

Support services include:

  • departmental case managers
  • mental health support teams
  • medical staff
  • interpreting services
  • education staff.

All operational and maintenance aspects of the centre are undertaken by the Detention Services Provider.
