Inverbrackie Alternative Places of Detention

The Inverbrackie Alternative Place of Detention (APOD) was opened on 18 December 2010. It is located near Woodside, 37 kilometres north of Adelaide, the South Australian capital. It is a Department of Defence property and was unoccupied when it was offered to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Accommodation and facilities

The Inverbrackie APOD is a medium-to-long-term facility catering for families who have been assessed as acceptable for a low security facility.

The facility consists of 81 free-standing houses as well as a number of support buildings that, or will include:

  • Community Centre
  • Visitors building
  • Shop
  • Multi-purpose marquees for recreation
  • Playgroup building
  • Basketball court
  • Volleyball nets/fields
  • Children’s playground
  • Medical clinic
  • Classrooms
  • Internet facilities.

Support services include:

  • departmental case managers
  • on-site general practitioner and mental health support
  • on-site interpreters
  • religious liaison officer
  • Counsellors from the Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitations Services (STTARS).

The operational and maintenance aspects of the facility are managed by the Detention Services Provider, Serco Australia Pty Ltd (Serco).
