Darwin Alternative Places of Detention

A number of alternative places of detention have been established in Darwin. These properties have been block booked by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship for the purpose of accommodating family groups and young adults transferred from Christmas Island.

Accommodation and facilities

Darwin Alternative Places of Detention (APODs) offer appropriate accommodation and amenities to people in immigration detention.

A full schedule of activities for clients, including English language classes, have commenced at each of the sites.

SERCO, the detention services provider (DSP), is contracted to provide services similar to those at other facilities, however, provision of catering and cleaning services remain the responsibility of the property owners.
